The Original Beauty Blender | Review

Hello again,

I have used makeup sponges before but they’ve always left me feeling a little disappointed. In the past, I found that they absorbed more foundation than they were actually putting onto my face. After a while I decided that they weren’t worth buying anyone and stuck to stippling and buffing brushes – mainly the Real Techniques ones.

I don’t live under a rock so I’m quite aware that the Original Beauty Blender has a reputation for being the best. Most people actually claim that no brush or sponge can be compared to this one. I’m a sucker for anything a) pink or b) that will make my life easier, so I decided to give it a go.

I ran the sponge under the tap a little and then rinsed it out so it was damp enough to blend my makeup but not so wet that the product would drip down my face.

Although I’d say I had to use more product than I would with a brush, it wasn’t enough to put me off. I started off by using really small amounts of foundation and built it up slightly just in case it started to look cakey.

I found that because the sponge was damp, it spread the makeup across my face a lot easier than a makeup brush usually does. My skin is naturally really dry and I’ve found over the past couple of months it’s been a lot harder to use foundation brushes on to blend in my foundation and concealer. I feel like the brush has just been drying out my skin even more.

Although I wouldn’t say that the Beauty Blender made my makeup last any longer, it definitely made it look a lot better throughout the day. My skin feels a lot more hydrated and my makeup looks a lot dewier. Because it covers my face so easily and blends so well, I end up using less makeup than I did with a makeup brush that took a long time to blend properly. I feel like my makeup doesn’t dry out my skin as much as it usually would when I use a brush. Believe me, my skin needs all the moisture it can get.

Overall, I’m really impressed with this. It’s true: the Original Beauty Blender is a lot better than other makeup sponges.

As always, thanks for reading!

I got the beauty blender for Christmas and it’s so strange how much squishier it is than others! I have a $5 sponge that has a better shape for me but the original beauty blender is definitely better than a lot of dupes!

Sponges I’ve used in the past were always too hard to use – it hurt to dab the product into my face haha. I’m so glad I found this 🙂

  2. Emma Avatar

I always use a sponge to dab off excess, but after reading thins I’ll try using mine instead of a brush. Thanks!

I got a blender dupe at Walgreens that I loved but can’t find anymore, so I might have to break down and get the original. It really does make blending makeup so much easier (but always wet!)

    1. courteneynoonan Avatar

When this one gets old I’m going to try and find a good dupe. Yes – I couldn’t imagine using a dry sponge haha 🙂

I’ve been using a beauty blender dupe for much longer than I really should have (it’s still in perfect condition minus a small foundation stain so I don’t want to get rid of it) but I’m always tempted into buying the original. If I’m being honest, I just want it because it’s pink.

    1. courteneynoonan Avatar

To be honest I only really wanted it because it’s pink haha. It’s still worth it though!

Just bought one of these but haven’t tried it yet. Good tips!

      I hope you like it!

I so want to buy one now. I’ve been debating for months. I have crazy dry skin and have always thought that with wetting the blender it would make my skin worse. So it’s good to know it has the opposite affect.

    1. courteneynoonan Avatar

I highly recommend it! Brushes dry my skin out so much but this is perfect 🙂

I have always wondered about this! It looks great and I’m tired of applying make up with my hands haha. I may have to try it!

    1. courteneynoonan Avatar

You should try it! I expect it blends more quickly than hands haha 🙂

I used to use my hands to put on my foundation and just recently switched to a brush. I’ve been curious about the blender sponges…I work long days so I really liked your feedback that it seems to help your make-up last longer. I think I may have to give it a try!

I’ve never used something like this, I would be interested in seeing a tutorial on how to use one.

I always use sponges because I find brushes too timeconsuming (I’m lazy), but you’re right they don’t usually work that well. I might give this a try as it might be just what I need.

I’ve had my beauty blender for a while now and I love it. I have the real techniques dupe as well, and while it is good it just isn’t the same as the real thing!

    1. courteneynoonan Avatar

I really want to try the Real Techniques one! I’ve heard mixed opinions on it but want to see for myself 🙂

I am dying to try a beauty blender, I have only been using brushes till now!

You should! It’s such a game changer 🙂

I actually just use my fingers when i do use foundation. I tried the beauty blender and found it cumbersome. My daughter loves hers though.

    1. courteneynoonan Avatar

I’m the complete opposite haha, I don’t know why I’ve just never liked using my fingers for foundation

  15. Heather Avatar

I haven’t tried the original one! I have one that I didn’t take very good care of, I think I will have to try this one!

    1. courteneynoonan Avatar

You should 🙂 it’s better than the other sponges I’ve tried

I’m forever tempted by this – I have had the RT one and it was good I thought. Then I got a HD one which was way better because it was more dense and it looked more like the original beauty blender. But why you so expensive haha! x

    1. courteneynoonan Avatar

I know what you mean! Makeup tools can be so pricey haha x

I’ve always had the same problem!!x

  18. Terri Steffes Avatar

I have been considering a blending tool and here you are! I usually dampen a brush and have a go but it doesn’t always look great when I am done. So this is something I would give a try!

    1. courteneynoonan Avatar

You should definitely try it! If you didn’t want to buy this one you could always start with a lower budget one to see if it’s for you 🙂

Before I bought a beauty blender, I purchased the Real Techniques sponge. It is still my favorite. I think it does as good a job as the BB and doesn’t cost as much. I do like the Beauty Blender, but I’m probably one of the few people who doesn’t think it’s the best thing ever.

I used to use make-up sponges years ago but stopped using them. I do find they are better though

I will have to tell my daughter about this. She is always looking out for something to help her with her makeup.

Thanks for trying this out. I was wondering if this would be worth it. It sounds like it’s a big yes!

I use the beauty blender as well!! It is amazing and I have two now haha. I felt skeptical at first about shelling that much money out for a sponge, but it really is great and I feel much more like a pro now with my makeup application.

    1. courteneynoonan Avatar

Exactly! My makeup sits on my face so much better now

Thanks for sharing your review! I’ve never used a beauty blender–I just stick with my brushes. I think if I wore more makeup that needed better blending, this would be a good choice.

I’ve never used a beauty blender before. I’m glad that it works great for make-up lovers though. It’s always nice to have the right tools to help perfect your look!

  26. Jalisa Marie Avatar

I’ve used the beauty blender and rotated to real techniques as well. I’m not a huge beauty buff where I can tell a difference so at this time I use both.

I really want to try the Real Techniques one! I’ve heard really good things about it 🙂

Wow, such a lovely product. Never heard of this before. Love the bright color and that it is such a cool addition to the makeup kit!

    1. courteneynoonan Avatar

The fact that it’s pink really encouraged me to buy it haha 🙂
