The Best Bits | January 2017

Hello again,

The first Best Bits post of this year is quite a simple one. Here are the three best things that happened this January…

Me and Cem went to Budapest from the end of December into the beginning of January and had the best time. We split our time between walking for miles to see all the sights and unwinding in the spa. My favourite parts of the holiday were ice skating, walking up Gellert Hill and seeing the government building light up at night. If you were wondering what Cem’s favourite part was, it was probably the GIANT pizza that he ordered…

I’d wanted to see this film for a while and I’m so glad that we got to see it in the cinema. It’s essentially about two people being stranded on their own in a spaceship. That’s a really boring description but if I say anything else about it then the story will be spoiled. I’d highly recommend it anyway!

Getting a job

I finally have a job! I haven’t had any paid work since the summer because I’ve been focusing on uni and finishing my 3 month social media internship. My internship didn’t quite end because I now have a proper job there and couldn’t be happier. I genuinely love being there so being paid for doing it is just a bonus.

As always, thank you for reading.

Let me know what happened in January for you…

Monthly Favourites | January 2017

Hello again,

January has been a pretty relaxed month for me so I haven’t been trying many new products. However, there are four products that were real game changers for me this month…

Soap & Glory Thick and Fast HD Mascara

This is an old favourite of mine but I haven’t used it since about 2015. I always loved it but never bought it again because I had other mascaras to use up. However, I got two for Christmas so started using it again and I don’t want to go back to using anything else. The applicator is really good at separating your lashes but adding volume making them clumpy. 10/10. Definitely buy it – unless you’re looking for a waterproof mascara – I’d stay away if that’s the case…

L’Oreal Pure Clay Detox Mask

I’m really late to the bandwagon on this one. I didn’t buy this face mask before because I already own too many. However, Superdrug have been offering students 20% off recently so I thought it wouldn’t hurt to buy it. It worked out at less than £5 which is cheaper than my favourite Lush face mask. I won’t say much about it because I’m going to do a full review of it once I’ve used it a bit more. However, I will say that it basically rips the dirt out of your pores. As disgusting as that sounds, my face feels a lot cleaner after I use this.

Garnier Moisture Restore Night Care

I’ve been using this for a couple of months now and I really really love it. If I apply this after I’ve cleaned my face just before I go to bed, I wake up with hydrated skin. Because my skin is naturally really dry, not using a night cream makes my skin much worse. This has been a bit of a winter skin saviour for me. I think it cost just over £2 from Superdrug too which is really affordable for the how well it works.

The Original Beauty Blender

I’ve tried beauty blenders before but never actually tried the proper Original Beauty Blender. I’d heard that it was better than other brands of sponges so thought I’d give it a go, even though I usually prefer used brushes for my concealer and foundation. I was really surprised at how well it works! If you wet it a little before applying your foundation, it applies really evenly and doesn’t let the product dry out. I have really dry skin and I was finding it difficult to apply makeup with a brush. It wouldn’t blend easily on my skin even though I was using I really good moisturiser and primer before my foundation. This is a much better alternative to brushes. *Thumbs up*.

As always, thanks for reading!

The Original Beauty Blender | Review

Hello again,

I have used makeup sponges before but they’ve always left me feeling a little disappointed. In the past, I found that they absorbed more foundation than they were actually putting onto my face. After a while I decided that they weren’t worth buying anyone and stuck to stippling and buffing brushes – mainly the Real Techniques ones.

I don’t live under a rock so I’m quite aware that the Original Beauty Blender has a reputation for being the best. Most people actually claim that no brush or sponge can be compared to this one. I’m a sucker for anything a) pink or b) that will make my life easier, so I decided to give it a go.

I ran the sponge under the tap a little and then rinsed it out so it was damp enough to blend my makeup but not so wet that the product would drip down my face.

Although I’d say I had to use more product than I would with a brush, it wasn’t enough to put me off. I started off by using really small amounts of foundation and built it up slightly just in case it started to look cakey.

I found that because the sponge was damp, it spread the makeup across my face a lot easier than a makeup brush usually does. My skin is naturally really dry and I’ve found over the past couple of months it’s been a lot harder to use foundation brushes on to blend in my foundation and concealer. I feel like the brush has just been drying out my skin even more.

Although I wouldn’t say that the Beauty Blender made my makeup last any longer, it definitely made it look a lot better throughout the day. My skin feels a lot more hydrated and my makeup looks a lot dewier. Because it covers my face so easily and blends so well, I end up using less makeup than I did with a makeup brush that took a long time to blend properly. I feel like my makeup doesn’t dry out my skin as much as it usually would when I use a brush. Believe me, my skin needs all the moisture it can get.

Overall, I’m really impressed with this. It’s true: the Original Beauty Blender is a lot better than other makeup sponges.

As always, thanks for reading!

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara | Review

Hello again,

The Maybelline Lash Sensational is probably one of the most talked about mascaras in the world of blogging. I started using it about a month ago after running out of my Benefit They’re Real mascara.

I’d say the most prominent feature to this product is the fact that it’s really lengthening. Paired with a good eyelash primer, it makes my eyelashes really fluttery and feminine. It doesn’t make them look like spider legs, like a lot of lengthening mascaras tend to do, but simply enhances your natural eyelashes.

It’s not the most lengthening mascara I’ve tried, but it provides the perfect length for me. I had tried mascaras in the past that make my eyelashes ridiculously long and I hated the way it looked.

If you’re looking for volume, this mascara probably isn’t for you. However, it doesn’t make your mascara look thin, it merely separates them in a fluttery sort of way. Because of this, this mascara never makes my eyelashes clumpy or too thick.

What I like the most is that although it separates my eyelashes, it doesn’t make them look unatural. As you can see, they’re not perfectly even like false lashes. They look exactly like my own eyelashes, with a little bit of volume and length.

As the mascara doesn’t provide a lot of volume, I usually apply some of my Rimmel Scandaleyes Reloaded mascara first. I only put one coat of it on my eyelashes before using the Maybelline Lash Sensational. Otherwise, my eyelashes will look a bit more sparse than I want them too. I feel like these two together give me everything I look for in a perfect mascara.

If you’re wondering why I’ve only skimmed over the Rimmel Scandaleyes mascara – it’s because there’s a full review coming to my blog really soon.

As you’ve probably gathered by now, this little beauty is definitely worth the hype.

As always, thank you for reading.

My Birthday | November 2016

Hello again,

This year my birthday started off a little different. At about 12:30am (so it’s only just my birthday here) I went to the toilet because I was about to go to bed. I didn’t take my room key fob with me because the rooms don’t lock by themselves.

When I tried to get back into my room, it was locked. I didn’t even have my phone with me or my slippers on either. I went downstairs to ask the security guard if he could let me in and he told me that the people from reception hadn’t left him the master key so he was unable to open my room. After about an hour of me standing in my kitchen watching an episode of Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares from 2013, he found some sort of emergency door unlocking device that eventually opened my door.

What a way to start the day.

During the day, I had to go to uni from 2pm until 5pm before I could spend an evening free of assignments and uni related stress.

Me and Cem went for dinner at Frankie and Benny’s. I had spaghetti and meatballs and it was heavenly. I was also too full to move afterwards and I didn’t even eat all of it.

Straight after we ate, we went to play TopGolf. We’re both highly competitive so we both thought we were going to win. I’m usually the loser of golf but today I had a feeling that today I was going to win.

As you can see, I was well on my way to victory. At one point I scored 13 which is unheard of in our games – we’re not the best golfers…

In the end we ended up drawing. I would’ve won but one of the balls I scored four with didn’t end up counting. I usually lose so I’ll take a tie over that. However, I spent a good 10 minutes sulking over the ball that never counted.

All in all I had a really chilled out birthday. I loved reading all of the birthday wishes that everyone sent me and I really enjoyed opening my cards. My cards will probably still be pinned to my notice board for the next few months, they look a lot nicer than the ‘to do’ lists and uni reminders that I have to stare at every day.

As always, thank you for reading.

…and thank you to anyone who wish me a happy brithday – I had a lovely day.

Lush ‘Mask of Magnaminty’ Face Mask | Beauty Review

Hello again,

Over the past few weeks I’ve been using this new minty face mask from Lush. The shop assistant in White City told me that this is their best mask for cleaning your pores and preventing breakouts. I find that if I don’t take care of my skin and keep it clean I get acne really easily, so of course I was willing to give it a go. You can use it on your body as well as your face but I feel like this small tub would run out quickly if I used it for my face AND body.

The mask reminds me of a really strong pack of chewing gum; It’s probably not for everyone though as it’s quite a strong, clean scent. I read that the peppermint ingredient actually stimulates the blood cells in your face which makes your skin look brighter, which is definitely something that my skin needs. As soon as autumn arrives and my tan fades, my skin feels really dull and dry so I’d say I’m definitely in need of some brightening up at the minute.

One of the things I love about this mask is the fact that it doesn’t dry like most face masks. Even after having it on my face for 15 minutes, the mask is still wet and sticky. Sometimes if I use face masks that dry quickly and feel tight on my face then my skin looks red and irritated afterwards. I don’t think there’s any point in investing in a product that’s just doing to dry out your face. This is by far the most gentle but still the most effective face mask I’ve ever used. I even love it more than my Lush Cup O’ Coffee mask, which I didn’t think would ever happen.

At the minute I don’t actually have any spots, but I do have a little bit of scarring on one of my cheeks from having them previously. I’ve found that since I’ve been using this face mask, the redness on my cheeks is slowly disappearing. Another thing that I love about it is I only have to use it once or twice a week for it to make a difference to my skin. I usually apply it after I’ve been to the gym because my skin’s always a sweaty mess. Sometimes, just washing your face isn’t enough.

I’ll definitely buy this again once I’ve finished it, especially seeing as it was only a little over £6. Compared to other face masks I’ve tried and heart about, it definitely seems like the best value for money.

Thanks for reading!

Let me know if you have any face mask recommendations because I’m sure this one won’t last for long…

No7 Makeup and Skincare Favourites

Hello again,

A brand that I’ve been recently getting into is No7. So far, I’m loving all of the makeup and beauty products that I have of theirs. A great thing about No7 is that Boots always seem to be giving away some sort of voucher or discount on the No7 products. There ALWAYS seems to be a 3 for 2 or buy one get one half price offer going on.

Anyway. Amongst the products that I’ve tried, here are my favourites…

Beautiful Skin Overnight Revitalising Eye Balm

As mentioned in my Evening Skincare Routine, this eye gel is one of my favourites. It soaks into the skin really easily and reduces eye puffiness. If I don’t use this then the next morning my under eyes look darker and puffier.

Dramatic Lift Mascara

I got this mascara in a free gift set – you know them ones where you spend a certain amount of money and get a free gift? At first I was a bit sceptical about this mascara as it didn’t seem to be as lengthening as my usual mascaras. However, once I changed up my eyelash primer I realised that it was the primer and not the mascara that was the problem. I was still scraping out the last bit of my primer when I tried this mascara – no wonder it wasn’t working out for me. This mascara looks very natural but still gives my lashes a lot of length and volume.

Stay Perfect Amazing Eyes Pencil

Truth be told, I don’t use eyeliner very often at all. However, if I do, then it’s always this one because it applies really smoothly and isn’t thick and dry like I find a lot of eye liners to be.

Airbrush Away Primer

This product was also in the free gift set I got, which is why it’s only a sample size. I tried this primer for the first time and I absolutely love it! It reminds me of my old favourite Maybelline Baby as it’s more of a serum. However, this one is a lot thicker so feels like it gives more coverage than the Maybelline one. My makeup seems to stay in place until I take it off at night which is definitely a plus.

Essential Moisture Day Cream

This is probably my new favourite moisturiser. Despite it being quite a thick cream, it soaks into the skin really quickly and makes my whole face feel super soft. I usually use this moisturiser in the morning when I’ve cleansed my face and I’m not planning on wearing makeup.

High Shine ‘Daydreamer’ Lip Crayon

I was a bit skeptical about trying this because I’ve tried one of the Revlon ones and didn’t really like it. However, this lip crayon applies just like a lipstick. The product itself is really smooth and doesn’t dry out my lips like I expected it too. I also think that this colour is a perfect nude. Also I prefer wearing lipstick, this lip crayon is a nice alternative if you’re looking for something different.

Moisture Drench ‘Caramel Silk’ Lipstick

This lipstick is probably my favourite lipstick of all time! The colour perfectly matches my lips so it looks really natural. At first I thought that the colour would be too dark for me but it’s a really nice ‘your lips but better’ shade. Unlike a lot of lipsticks I’ve tried, this one doesn’t dry out my lips at all. I’m guessing that’s what the ‘Moisture Drench’ part is for…
