Soap & Glory ‘Thick & Fast’ HD Mascara | Review

Hello again,

Although this mascara is an old favourite, for some reason I stopped using it a while ago so I could try some new mascaras. I recently came back to it as I ended up getting two for Christmas – it must’ve been a sign…

This is a really good alternative if you’re looking for something that’s better than standard drugstore mascaras but not out of budget, like the luxury brand mascaras. It’s a nice in-betweener and it’s definitely worth the money.

img_6062

You can’t really tell from the photo because the difference is really subtle but the actual mascara brush has more strands on one side. One side has fewer thick strands and the other has more thin strands. So, one side better for separation and the other side better for volume. I start by using the side with less strands on as it applies the product more evenly. However, using just this side makes my eyelashes really thick so I always use the fluffier side to separate them.

img_6060-1

I find that mascaras are usually either volumising but clumpy or volumising but not lengthening so this is the perfect in-between for me. Whilst it gives my eyelashes a lot of volume, it does it without making them clump together. It also adds a great amount of length. I sometimes find that some mascaras can make my eyelashes look too long and false, because I have quite long lashes anyway.

I will suggest using an eyelash curler and then a primer with any mascara. I find it stops my eyelashes from clumping and separates my eyelashes evenly before I’ve even put any mascara on. This mascara works really well with my NYX Big and Loud Primer, which I featured on my blog not too long ago.

img_6063

I’ve used a lot of mascaras in the same price range as this one but there hasn’t been one that volumises and lengthens as well as this one without going over the top. I usually end up using a combination of two or three mascaras to get my eyelashes how I want them and it honestly takes me forever. However, when I use this one, it literally takes five minutes.

img_6058

You can find the mascara in Boots for £10.50 if you wanted to try it. They also still stock the original version, the Thick and Fast Mascara, if you wanted to try that one first. There’s a lot of difference between the new and old ones but they both work really well. If you wanted to try both of them, Boots are also doing an offer on Soap and Glory products so you can buy one product and get another one for half the price…

As always, thank you for reading.

Monthly Favourites | January 2017

Hello again,

January has been a pretty relaxed month for me so I haven’t been trying many new products. However, there are four products that were real game changers for me this month…

Soap & Glory Thick and Fast HD Mascara

This is an old favourite of mine but I haven’t used it since about 2015. I always loved it but never bought it again because I had other mascaras to use up. However, I got two for Christmas so started using it again and I don’t want to go back to using anything else. The applicator is really good at separating your lashes but adding volume making them clumpy. 10/10. Definitely buy it – unless you’re looking for a waterproof mascara – I’d stay away if that’s the case…

img_5578

L’Oreal Pure Clay Detox Mask

I’m really late to the bandwagon on this one. I didn’t buy this face mask before because I already own too many. However, Superdrug have been offering students 20% off recently so I thought it wouldn’t hurt to buy it. It worked out at less than £5 which is cheaper than my favourite Lush face mask. I won’t say much about it because I’m going to do a full review of it once I’ve used it a bit more. However, I will say that it basically rips the dirt out of your pores. As disgusting as that sounds, my face feels a lot cleaner after I use this.

img_5577-1

Garnier Moisture Restore Night Care

I’ve been using this for a couple of months now and I really really love it. If I apply this after I’ve cleaned my face just before I go to bed, I wake up with hydrated skin. Because my skin is naturally really dry, not using a night cream makes my skin much worse. This has been a bit of a winter skin saviour for me. I think it cost just over £2 from Superdrug too which is really affordable for the how well it works.

img_5580

The Original Beauty Blender

I’ve tried beauty blenders before but never actually tried the proper Original Beauty Blender. I’d heard that it was better than other brands of sponges so thought I’d give it a go, even though I usually prefer used brushes for my concealer and foundation. I was really surprised at how well it works! If you wet it a little before applying your foundation, it applies really evenly and doesn’t let the product dry out. I have really dry skin and I was finding it difficult to apply makeup with a brush. It wouldn’t blend easily on my skin even though I was using I really good moisturiser and primer before my foundation. This is a much better alternative to brushes. *Thumbs up*.

#MKBParty Goodies Giveaway | AD

Hello again,

In November, Come Round contacted me and asked me to work with them on their MyKindaBook (#MKBParty) campaign, where I was given several books and a selection of goodies to try out for myself. Seeing as they kindly sent me more products than I need for myself, I thought I’d give some away to say thank you to people who have been supporting my blog recently.

The giveaway is running on my Twitter over at @courteneyjn if you want to enter. All you have to do is follow me and retweet the pinned tweet on my profile. The giveaway is open to the UK only this time but I’m looking to do more international giveaways as my blog grows. The winner will be chosen at random on December 29th 2016 – I’ll announce who the winner is at some point during that day. Bear with me because I’ll actually be travelling to Budapest that day too.  The giveaway prize will be posted in early January as that’s when I’ll be back in the UK…

You can see the giveaway prizes in the Tweet but here’s a brief list of everything that’s up for grabs:

  • Significant Life Events notebook. This little notebook works really well as a list book as it’s small enough to fit in most bags.
  • Soap & Glory Highlight and Sculpt Stick. Soap & Glory is one of my all time favourite brands so I was really excited when I opened this! It’s essentially a highlight and blush all in one.
  • ‘A lie was like a fire’ candle. This candle smells amazing – it’s vanilla scented so it’ll fit most people’s tastes.
  • Bookmark and pencil. Nice little additions to the notebook and book.
  • Yankee Candle in Pineapple Cilantro. In case vanilla isn’t your thing, I added one of my own fruity Yankee Candles.
  • Soap & Glory Sugar Crush Hand Food. This is one of my favourite skincare products so I’m sure the winner will love it too.
  • Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. This book is actually in The Zoella Book Club at WHSmith so I’m sure a lot of people would love to read this.
  • Travel mug. I actually have a few travel mugs so I thought someone else could make better use of this. Tis the season for hot drinks after all.

Monthly Favourites | November 2016

Hello again,

I’m feeling pretty smug right now because I’ve managed to upload two monthly favourites in a row. In case you’re new here, this sort of consistently is new to my blog.

Aussie Heat Protectant Spray

Since I’ve been back at uni I’ve been using a lot more heat on my hair, especially from drying it. I want to minimise the amount of damage the heat could do to my hair as much as possible so I decided to invest in a heat protectant spray. I always love Aussie’s products so I thought that this one would be a worthwhile investment. It smells really sweet, but not in a sickly way, and is really easy to spread through my hair.  I use it every time I’m about to use heat on my hair and I’ve actually noticed that it makes my hair a lot less frizzy and more soft. I feel like without this my hair would be in a much worse state.

Soap & Glory Face Soap and Clarity Vitamin C Facial Wash

This is an old favourite of mine but I recently repurchased it after all of my other face washes started to run out. It was on offer in Boots for just £5.33  which is really reasonable for a product this size. I know it’ll last me ages because you only need a tiny amount for every time you use it. It’s really gently and doesn’t irritate my eyes or my skin at all.

20161206_142602810_ios

The Body Shop Vitamin E Night Serum

I try to remember to use this every night once I’ve taken all of my makeup off and cleansed my face. Sadly, I’m not always this prepared but when I am, I really notice the difference in my skin. When I wake up after using this, my skin feels really hydrated but not in an oily way that you might expect from a serum. I suppose the fact that I have incredibly dry skin prevents this from making my face oily. All in all, this product is amazing, especially for winter. It also smells delicious.

20161206_142609706_ios

Prison Break

So I started re-watching Prison Break again. Aside from Pretty Little Liars, it’s my favourite series of all time. I don’t want to give anything away but I will tell you that it involves a prison and you should just watch it.

screen-shot-2016-12-06-at-14-21-09

The Body Shop nail polish in British Rose

This is an old favourite. In the bottle it looks awfully girly but when you actually use it, it’s very pale and natural. When I have it on I actually forget that it’s nail polish because it blends so well with my skin tone. I apply two coats and end up with a pretty pale pinky nude shade – I’m sorry, that’s the only way I can describe it. It’s a nice every day colour and lasts a long time.

20161206_142424705_ios

Rimmel Scandaleyes Reloaded Mascara

This is a really new purchase for me but over the past few weeks I’ve been loving it. I saw a lot of bloggers talking about it as Rimmel have recently sent them out in PR packages. Curiosity got the better of me and I decided to try it. My expectations were high because I always love Rimmel’s mascaras and I wasn’t disappointed. It’s really lengthening and volumising without getting clumpy.

20161206_142735692_ios

Primark Facial Cleanse and Massage Brush

I’ve really upped my skincare game recently in a desperate attempt to get rid of my acne. My acne has now fully disappeared and I just have a very tiny patch of scarring to get rid of. This brush played a big part in cleaning my pores and thoroughly cleansing my face every morning and night. I noticed a substantial change in my skin after I started using it. My face feels and looks a lot smoother and even.

Winter Skincare and Haircare Tips and Saviours

Hello again,

Like a lot of people, I have dry skin and find that my skin gets even worse during the winter months. Although sometimes, no matter how hard I try, there’s no stopping the bitter cold air from drying out my skin, there are some things that I try and do to prevent it.

Moisturise

Surely this is a no-brainer. If your skin is dry then look for some moisturisers and creams that target dry skin especially. That being said, there’s no point in just using any old moisturiser that won’t actually benefit your skin. You could end up buying a moisturiser that is better for oily skin, which would be a waste of time and money. Take the time to read reviews of products before you buy them so you can see how other people with different skin types got on with them.

Most of the body moisturising products I use are from The Body Shop and Soap & Glory. Personally, I think that their products are unbeatable. As well as stopping my skin from drying out, they always smell feminine and make me feel as if my skin actually looks a lot nicer.

Use lip balm

If you can remember to apply lipstick or lipgloss everyday then you have no excuse for not using your Vaseline or Baby Lips. My lips are always chapped and cracked throughout winter so I try and keep a lip balm in every pocket of every coat and bag that I own. Dry lips are so uncomfortable and at times painful so it’s also no good to lather matter lipsticks all over them before you’ve thought to treat the dryness.

I’ve been using the Baby Lips balms ever since they were released and I absolutely love them. As well as softening your lips, most of them are scented and tinted so you don’t have to bother with applying a lip stick over the top. I know a lot of people like ‘Pink Punch’ for this purpose. ‘Peach Kiss’ also doubles up as a lovely nude. I also love the Nivea strawberry lip balm, as well as being moisturising it gives my lips a pretty tint of red.

Use the right hair products

If you read the different shampoo and conditioner bottles you’ll find that they all have different purposes. It seems obvious but I bet that there are a lot of people that pick up the first bottle they see without bothering to see if it’s right for their hair. My favourite shampoo and conditioner has always been TRESemmé. At the moment I’m using their volume products because my hair has felt lifeless all winter – these products definitely keep my hair looking thick and glossy.

Also, if you have the time, try using a hair mask instead of the old leaving-your-conditioner-in-for-ages-before-washing-it-off trick. Hair masks restore health to your hair by making it feel softer and less brittle. During the winter I have to deeply condition my hair more often than I do in the summer because the cold air always makes my hair feel dried out, which isn’t what people usually want for their mane.

Use an eye cream

This is so important. My face is incredibly dry which makes the area under my eyes dry and itchy too. Every morning after I wash my face I make sure that I use an eye cream which massively improves the feeling of my skin. Also, using eye creams will usually make you look more awake as reduce the puffiness of your eyes. This is ideal if you don’t get a lot of sleep or find yourself developing bags under your eyes as a result of binge watching Netflix all weekend. Give your poor eyes a rest.

I usually use the Soap & Glory Puffy Eye Cream but I’ve just finished my pot so I’m now using the Simple eye cream instead.

Frequently change razors

Writing this seems a little TMI for this sort of post but everyone should be told to use a fresh razor regularly. Using blunt razors will damage your skin, making it more sensitive and sore. By using a new razor your skin will be smoother and less likely to become irritated. The Dollar Shave Club offers monthly plans where you can pay for new razor blades to be delivered to you – ideal if you’re too lazy to go out and get new ones yourself.

Thank you for reading!

Soap & Glory Skincare Favourites

Hello again,

Today I thought I’d share with you some of
my skincare favourites from Soap & Glory, which is one of my all time favourite beauty brands.

Soap & Glory are known for bringing out collections of products that smell amazing. They smell as if they would taste really good, which is probably why their products often have food related names.

Soap & Glory also sell makeup. Their Thick & Fast Mascara is one of the best eye products I’ve ever used. I’ve also heard really good things about their eyeliner and concealer. That’s a story for a whole different post.

Peaches and Clean Deep Cleansing Milk

This face wash is one of the most gentle skincare products I’ve ever tried. There’s nothing worse than using cleansing products that sting your eyes or irritate your skin. Peaches and Clean removes makeup effectively and leaves my skin feeling really soft and even
afterwards. I find that a lot of face washes or makeup removers actually sting my skin whilst they’re on my face and leave my skin dry after use.

Puffy Eye Attack

I use the Puffy Eye Attack cream under my eyes every day before I apply my makeup and sometimes at night when I’ve just washed my face. It definitely helps to soothe my under-eyes, which often feel quite dry when I wake up. I struggle to sleep so when I get up in the morning there’s a good chance that I’ve got two bags of joy forming under my eyes. This product definitely helps to get rid of them.

Translucent BB Cream

I’ve been using this product almost everyday for the past two years. I use it regardless of whether or not I’m going to wear makeup. If you don’t want to wear makeup – like in the hotter, it’s good to use as it contains SPF and makes your skin soft and even. In the summer my skin feels especially dry because I tan quite easily, meaning I always need some sort of moisturiser on my skin – this is the best one I’ve found for my face.  Also, I use it before I apply makeup as it works well as a primer and moisturiser because it smoothens out my skin. It’s translucent so it doesn’t look like you’ve overloaded your face with products. I don’t think I would ever use a coloured BB cream before applying makeup. This BB cream sinks into my skin quite quickly so it doesn’t feel cakey on my skin.

Orangeasm Body Wash

This body wash smells amaaaaaazing! Every time I get this I use it really quickly – I must enjoy smelling like the fresh, zesty scent of an orange. Like every other Soap & Glory product out there, this also makes your skin feel soft after using it. Can you imagine if Soap & Glory made bath bombs? They’d smell so good.

Heel Genius

I don’t think I’d ever use any other product to moisturise my feet. I’m always thankful for Heel Genius if I’ve been on my feet all day at work because it’s so soothing and cool on my skin. However, I really don’t like the smell of this one. It smells a cream that would be used in hospitals. I don’t really know how to describe it. It’s not fruity or pleasant like the rest of their products. It smells chemically and unnatural .

Hand Food

I really don’t use hand cream as often as I should. I should definitely start keeping one of these in my bag because it’s the best hand cream I’ve ever used. It sinks into the skin really quickly so my hands don’t feel greasy after I use it. It smells very sweet and feminine, exactly like their The Scrub of Your Life and The Righteous Butter products. Describing how something smells is actually more difficult than it sounds – I’m running out of synonyms for ‘nice’.

The Scrub of Your Life

Like the Orangeasm Body Wash, I always seem to fly through this product. Unlike a lot of body scrubs it’s actually really gentle. I find
that the beads in a lot of scrubs can feel quite
harsh, and almost irritating, on my skin. What’s better than a product that can clean, exfoliate and moisturise your skin at the same time? (Nothing)

Thank you for reading!

Please give me your Soap & Glory recommendations if you have any! I’m sure I own most of their skincare products but I don’t own many of their makeup products.

Current Skincare Favourites

Hello again,

Recently I’ve been shopping around for more skincare products to prevent my skin from drying out and to clear up my recent break-outs. I think I’ve found a skincare routine that’s right for my skin so I wanted to tell you about some of the skincare products that I’ve been loving recently.

Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash Facial Cleanser

I’ve been using this product for a long time; I always wash my face with it each morning and night. It’s great for clearing impurities from your face, including dirt, oil or that smudge of makeup you didn’t remove. After washing my face with this I feel fully cleansed, I will repurchase this product many times more as I am constantly trying to prevent acne, breakouts and blackheads from uninvitedly invading my face.2015/01/img_0992.jpg

Derma Pad Deep Pore Treatment Pads

When I’ve removed my makeup and washed my face I use exfoliating pads to clean any breakouts on my face. Using this every night ensures that spots dry out more quickly; I’ve also found that fewer spots appear on my face. Prevention is better than a cure.

2015/01/img_0993.jpg

Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water

This is a product that I’ve been using for a few months, after seeing it appear on many blogs and YouTube channels. I was a bit hesitant at first, thinking ‘why am I paying for glorified water?’, how wrong I was… The cleansing water not only removes makeup but it doubles up as a toner. My face feels refreshed, clean and even immediately after use. Another perk of this product is that it contains perfume, meaning that it doesn’t sting my eyes when I’m using it to remove my mascara and it doesn’t irritate my pores or aggravate breakouts.2015/01/img_0995.jpg

Soap & Glory Puffy Eye Attack Hydragel Turbo-Boost

I received this eye gel in the Soap & Glory Face Time gift set for Christmas. Where have I been without this? More often than not I struggle to sleep at night and wake up the next morning with dark, puffy under eyes. This product has helped me to minimalise the tiredness in my eyes and will brighten up my face. I would recommend this to anyone with the same problem. Even if your eyes aren’t that puffy it will still brighten up your eyes. Try it!

2015/01/img_0996.jpg

Soap & Glory Sugar Crush Body Scrub

This was another Christmas gift that I have also received in previous years. I will never stop loving this product. I would recommend using this when you’ve finished work or after a long day; it leaves my skin feeling exfoliated and refreshed. I work in fast food so I need to ensure that my skin is free from greasy impurities after my shifts, this product works really well for this. Another perk of this scrub is that it smells absolutely amazing; it’s a very fruity product.2015/01/img_0999.jpg

The Body Shop Chocomania Body Lotion

I received this chocolatey lotion in a limited edition Christmas gift set, I love the whole set but this product is definitely one that stands out. As well as making my skin feel baby-bum soft, I smell deliciously like chocolate after use. I would highly recommend purchasing this product either for yourself or as a gift!2015/01/img_1002.jpg
